CALGARY – UBC defensive back
Jaxon Ciraolo-Brown recorded three interceptions, one off the school record set in 1997, but it was not enough as the Thunderbirds fell 36-17 to the Dinos in Calgary Saturday to conclude the 2019 Canada West football season.
Â
UBC finishes the campaign with a record of 2-6. No. 8-ranked Calgary (6-2) clinches first place in Canada West and home field advantage throughout the Hardy Cup playoffs.
Â
The windy, penalty-filled affair saw a combined 25 accepted penalties between the teams, as well as seven total turnovers. Calgary's defence gave up just 193 yards of total offence, and opened the game's scoring with a 40-yard fumble recovery by Matthew Lucyshyn.
Â
Calgary was able follow up the defensive touchdown with a Josiah Joseph sneak from the one, and jump out to an early 14-0 lead.

The Thunderbirds, who had already been eliminated from playoff contention, showed some fight to get back in the game, after their best offensive drive of the game led to a
Jacob Patten 7-yard touchdown catch from
Gabe Olivares. On the ensuing Calgary drive,
Nick Cross picked off Dinos quarterback Adam Sinagra and take it to the house for a 17-yard score tying the game at 14.
Â
Unfortunately for UBC, it was all Dinos from that point on, as Sinagra would shake off the interception and lead a touchdown drive that ended with another Joseph sneak to give Calgary the lead once again at 21-14.
Â
The wind was a factor all game, as the team heading into the stiff breeze was having limited success. Niko DiFonte was, however, able to use the wind to his advantage at the end of the half, and boomed a 51-yard field goal to give the Dinos a 25-14 lead at halftime.Â
Â
The lone second-half touchdown came on an incredible one-handed snag by Nathanael Durkan on a pass from Sinagra. Each team added a field goal to round out the scoring.Â

Â
Ciraolo-Brown's first pick came with just over a minute left in the second quarter. Then on the last play of the half, he intercepted Sinagra's throw into the UBC end zone, and returned the ball 92 yards.
Â
The third interception for Ciraolo-Brown came on the opening play of the final quarter, snagging the ball at the Calgary 27-yard line, which led to a
Garrin McDonnell field goal. Ciraolo-Brown finishes the season tied for third in the Canada West with three interceptions.
Â
The school and league record for picks in a game belongs to Curtis Galick, who had four against Manitoba on Sept. 27, 1997. Les MacFarlane of Saskatchewan also had four in a game, also against Manitoba, in 1975.
