WINNIPEG – Despite outshooting the Manitoba Bisons by greater than a two to one margin, the UBC Thunderbirds dropped a 5-2 decision Saturday night at Winnipeg's Wayne Fleming Arena.
The Bisons (4-3) took advantage of their chances, scoring three times in the first period en route to their second straight win.
UBC outshot Manitoba 42-18 in the game, but it was the Bisons who were able to break through.
"We had a ton of zone time, a ton of scoring chances but we needed to score a couple more goals," said UBC head coach
Sven Butenschon who also blamed a slow start for the eventual outcome. "We have enough talent in there that we can do it, we just have to work on our execution, stick to it, and stick together. It's going to come, the dam is going to break eventually we just need to continue to stick to the process."
Veterans led the way for Manitoba, as fifth-year defenceman Adam Henry scored two goals while fifth-year forward Jonah Wasylak notched two assists.
Matthew Stanley, Geordie Keane, and Dylan Thiessen also scored for the Bisons, who rattled off the first four goals of the game to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish. UBC got a second period marker from
Carter Popoff and a third period goal from
Tyler Sandhu.
In net, the Bisons got another excellent performance from first-year goalie Riley Lamb — the conference leader in saves. Lamb was able to make another 40 on Saturday, including 20 in the second period alone, to earn the win.
Patrick Dea made 13 saves opposite Lamb for UBC.
Manitoba's first goal came 4:11 in as Dylan Thiessen made a brilliant blue line move to score on the power play. Goals from Keane and Henry rounded out the first, as the Bisons went into the first intermission up 3-0.
After another Henry goal made it 4-0 to start the second, penalties started to haunt the Herd. UBC began to control play and the Bisons took four straight penalties in the period. Still, the T-Birds were only able to capitalize once, despite 21 shots on net.
Sandhu's goal just 58 seconds into the third would make it closer, but again Manitoba was able to keep UBC from doing further damage. An empty netter from Stanley gave the game its final score.
Manitoba and UBC meet again Sunday at Wayne Fleming Arena.
"We just need to do exactly what we did in the second and third periods," said Butenschon of what his team needs to do to have success Sunday. "If we play a full 60 minutes like that there's no way we lose that game. Start the way we finished this game and we'll give ourselves a really good chance to win."
Puck drop is set for 12:00 p.m. PT.
