T-Birds get past Timberwolves to conclude regular season

The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team got back to winning ways on Saturday night, as they dispatched the visiting UNBC Timberwolves 3-1 at a chilly Ken Woods Field to conclude their regular season.

It was a quick start for UBC, as a ball found Alyssa Hunt inside the UNBC half, and her right footed shot from 20 yards beat UNBC goalkeeper Madi Doyle for a 1-0 'Birds lead 9 minutes in. UBC head coach Jesse Symons brought on Michelle Jang midway through the first half and was rewarded for it. Just shy of the 30-minute mark Jang received the ball from distance inside the Timerwolves half, letting a perfect shot go that found the back of the net for a highlight reel second goal for the T-Birds.

Jang once again showed her talent offensively later on in the half, as her left footed cross dropped kindly for Hunt who outwaited Doyle and deposited the ball into the net for UBC's third, in the 41st minute and a 3-0 lead into the break.

UNBC came out much more organized in the second half, not allowing much of anything going forward for the T-Birds. The only real chance for UBC early on came off the boot of senior Natasha Klasios who came on as a sub earlier in the half. She had a go from just outside the box that was saved by Doyle.

The visitors were not going to leave this game empty handed though, as their sustained pressure throughout the second half led to a goal. Midfielder Kianna Swift who was a force for the Timberwolves in this one, played a great ball through for leading scorer Sofia Jones. Jones placed a low shot past UBC second half goalie sub Sarah Johns. The 'Birds responded well, earning a few late corners but were unable to connect on them, and the game finished 3-1.

"I think the big thing we wanted to talk about today was jumping on them early and we did that." said UBC head coach Jesse Symons post game regarding Hunt's early goal. "We have been on point with our defensive structure all season, credit to UNBC, that's probably the first goal we have given up all season where a team plays through us, and we don't give the ball away."

UBC open their playoff schedule next weekend in either Edmonton or Saskatoon while UNBC has clinched the sixth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division and still await their next opponent.
