VANCOUVER –
Michelle Jang's 82nd-minute goal gave the UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team a 1-0 triumph over the visiting Simon Fraser Clan Saturday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver.
Â
"It's always great to play SFU, they're a great program, they've got some great players and they're well coached," said UBC head coach
Jesse Symons. "They put up a battle today and fortunately, we were able to keep control of the ball and get rewarded with a goal late in the game. It was great to see
Michelle Jang get on the scoresheet again like she did in Oregon."
Â
Rachel Kordysz found Jang on the right side of the penalty area with a pass and Jang converted the opportunity, firing the ball just underneath the crossbar for the lone goal of the match.
Â
UBC fired 10 shots towards the Clan net, while the visitors had four attempts, and each side had four corner kicks.Â
Â
Starter
Emily Moore (two saves) and rookie
Sarah Johns (one save) shared the win after playing in net for a half each. SFU's Mikayla Isobe made six saves on the day.
Â
The Thunderbirds took control in the second half after an evenly-contested first 45 minutes.
Â
The Clan's best scoring chance came in the 23rd minute off the foot of Katelyn Erhardsen, but her point-blank shot was turned aside by Moore.
Â
UBC's final game before the start of Canada West conference play will take place Monday night at Thunderbird Stadium. This year's Jumpstart game will feature the T-Birds and the Douglas College Royals, starting at 7 p.m.
