VANCOUVER – The UBC men's soccer team has landed yet another highly sought-after recruit as midfielder Nick Fussell has chosen to join the Thunderbirds in the fall of 2018.
A native of Surrey, B.C., the 19-year old who's been accepted into the UBC Sauder School of Business is a product of the Surrey United soccer club but has spent the last three seasons as an impact player with the Whitecaps Residency program. Fussell helped guide this year's U-19 Residency team to the US Development Academy League semifinals as a regular starter that added two goals in five playoff games.
"I am looking forward to the experience of being part of the UBC soccer team while also taking the opportunity of continuing my studies in the UBC Sauder program," said Fussell. "I can't wait to play and train alongside my new teammates with the goal of winning a national championship on home soil this fall."
Fussell marks the third big recruiting addition in as many months for the T-Birds joining fellow former members of the Whitecaps Residency program in Thomas Gardner and Daniel Kaiser.
"Nick has the ability to be a significant contributor right away and hopefully for many years to come," said UBC head coach
Mike Mosher. "Nick is a mobile, box to box type midfielder who will help us score more goals but equally as important he's also a great student who wants to get a top-quality education and I see him performing very well both on the pitch and in the classroom. I am thrilled Nick will be joining our program and look forward to working with him in August when we start preseason."
The local product had options when it came to furthering his education and athletic pursuits but says he couldn't pass up what the Point Grey campus had to offer on all fronts.
"What initially attracted me to UBC was the first-class environment, the chance to receive a top ranked education while playing for one of the most successful university soccer programs in Canada."
