UBC and Carroll split doubleheader

SURREY, B.C. – The host UBC Thunderbirds and the Carroll (Mont.) Fighting Saints split their Cascade Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader Friday at Softball City in Surrey, B.C.

The Thunderbirds (2-7, 1-2 CCC) won the opener 7-6, before the Fighting Saints (12-5, 1-1 CCC) answered with a 7-3 triumph in the second game.

In Game 1, Frances Ramsay hit a full-count sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Claire Eccles for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Carroll had tied the contest at 6-6 in the previous half of the inning on an Allison Williams RBI single that scored T.J. Rucker. It was part of a comeback effort by the Saints that erased a 4-1 advantage UBC carried into the fifth inning. With Carroll at the plate in the top of the fifth, Anna ApRoberts drove a double to left center to score Brooke Brewer.

UBC's Paige Harbord led off the home half of the fifth with a double on the first pitch of the inning. She crossed home plate two batters later when Michaela Moore singled to right field, pushing the home side's lead to 5-2.

The Saints tied the game with three big runs in the sixth. With one out, Tianna Sell, Kendall Mooney, Brittany Smith, and Brewer all recorded singles in consecutive fashion, with Brewer's hit scoring Mooney and Sell. Jaylin Kenney then tied the affair at 5-5 on an RBI groundout that allowed Smith to touch home plate.

The lead was short-lived, though. The Thunderbirds' Emily Chorpita knocked a one-out double into right field. A couple of batters later, she scored an unearned run on an error by the second baseman, to put UBC ahead 6-5.

Harbord had three hits for the Thunderbirds in Game 1, while Moore and Shaelyn Ogilvie drove in a pair of runs each. Moore opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single, and Ogilvie followed that up with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 for the hosts.

Smith cut the Carroll deficit in half in the second with an RBI single through the left side.

Chorpita's RBI groundout in the second allowed the T-Birds to convert Sierra Sherritt's leadoff triple to left center.

UBC made it 4-1 in the third on Ogilvie's second RBI of the game, which came on a single to first base that scored Harbord.

Sell went 3-for-4 batting for the Saints, while Brewer drive in two runs. She, ApRoberts and Smith all had a couple of hits each.

Emma Tuson (1-2) got the win after pitching 5.1 innings and conceding four runs. Williams threw a complete game from the circle in a losing cause, surrendering five earned runs to fall to 6-2.

In Game 2, a Carroll run in the fourth broke a 3-3 tie, before the Saints added three insurance runs in the seventh to earn the Friday split.

Sell continued her good play with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning.

The T-Birds replied with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Moore got UBC on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout. Then Ramsay drove a double down the right field line to score Ogilvie and Eccles. But that was it for UBC's offence.

Sell gave the Saints the lead in the fourth, coming home on a throwing error to second.

The win was sealed with an ApRoberts double in the seventh that scored Kenney and Rucker. ApRoberts then scored on Allison Bayer's single, which was one of a team-leading two hits on the day for her.

UBC's Zoe Gillis (1-3) threw every pitch for her team as well, but was tagged with the loss despite allowing just six hits. Ramsay and Sydney Brown had two hits each for UBC.

Tess Eaton pitched a complete game for Carroll, improving to 5-0 after giving up just a pair of earned runs.

The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday at Softball City, with the first game beginning at 12 noon.
