SURREY, B.C. -- The UBC Thunderbirds lost both ends of a weather-delayed Cascade Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader against the 14th-ranked Southern Oregon Raiders Saturday at Softball City in Surrey, B.C.
UBC (3-14, 2-7 CCC) fell 4-2 in Game 1, which began four hours after its original start time because of rain, before SOU (25-7, 9-2) earned a 10-0 six-inning, run-rule triumph in Game 2.
Game 1
The host Thunderbirds got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning, which saw three errors from the Raiders.
Frances Ramsay led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error, and moved to second on a
Shaelyn Ogilvie groundout.
Michaela Moore then came up to the plate, and she proceeded to hit a single that fell in the middle of three SOU players by the right field line. One of those defenders had more trouble fielding the ball on the ground, allowing Ramsay to score.
Southern Oregon tied the game in the next inning on a two-out RBI single to center field by Rebecca Velasquez.
UBC re-took the lead in the home half of the third as
Claire Eccles hammered a double to center field to bring home
Sydney Brown, who had reached base on a single up the middle to lead off the inning. However, Eccles was tagged out at third on a very close call, leaving UBC with no one on base with two outs, instead of a runner in scoring position with just one out.

The T-Birds took a slim 2-1 advantage into the fourth, but saw the visitors plate three runs, which turned out to be the difference in the contest.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Southern Oregon's Kelsey Randall tied the game on an RBI groundout. The next batter, Hannah Shimek, singled to center to score a pair and make it 4-2 in favour of the Raiders.
There were no runs the rest of the way as SOU held on for the win. UBC did threaten in the bottom of the sixth, as it had runners on first and second with two outs. However, Raider pitcher Gabby Sandoval (12-3) induced a groundout to end the inning.
Sandoval finished with a complete-game win, in which she surrendered just a lone earned run.
Ogilvie and Brown finished with two hits each to lead UBC.
Game 2
SOU set the tone for the nightcap with five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a pair of two-RBI doubles by Avery Morehead-Hutsell and Shimek, who ended the game with three hits and three runs batted in, and six RBIs in total on Saturday.
The Raiders added two runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.
Brown, Eccles, and
Taylore Jones got the hits for the T-Birds, who also drew four walks, in Game 2.
The two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday, starting with a CCC contest at 10 a.m., followed by a non-conference encounter at 12 noon, at Softball City.
