T-Birds go 1-2 on opening day in Abbotsford

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds shut out the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and suffered two close losses in opening-day action Saturday at the second stop of the Canada West Women's Sevens Series, hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, B.C.

The T-Birds opened with a 15-7 defeat at the hands of the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Madison Gold scored a try, which was converted by Brooke Bazian, to give UBC a 7-5 advantage going into the half. Lethbridge got two unconverted Hannah Lopez tries in the second half to claim the eight-point triumph.

UBC dominated its matchup against Thompson Rivers, which made its debut Saturday as the seventh Canada West member to compete in the rugby sevens, winning 50-0.

Ciara Malone recorded three tries, while Elizabeth Theemes-Golding and Nicole Mallow had two each to pace the Thunderbirds. Gold had the remaining try, and kicked the convert to post seven points in the game. Bazian and Shoshanah Seumanutafa both had a pair of converts.

UBC then finished the day with a heartbreaking 24-19 setback against Alberta, with the Pandas scoring the game-winning try on the final play.

After Alberta went ahead 7-0, Seumanutafa notched back-to-back tries to give the T-Birds a 12-7 lead at the break.

The Pandas evened the score at 12-12 before Mallow pushed her team ahead 19-12. Alberta made it 19-19 with a converted try before finding the in-goal area again to earn the win.

The tournament concludes on Sunday, with starting at 9:50 a.m. against Victoria. The T-Birds will then face Calgary at 11:05 a.m., before capping off the event against hosts Fraser Valley at 12:45 p.m.
