VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds swim teams took part in a pair of events, both at the short course distance, over the weekend in Calgary.

Maia Brundage and
Hau-Li Fan led the way for UBC, which competed without its national centre members, in a Friday tri-meet against two other university teams, the Calgary Dinos and Lethbridge Pronghorns. UBC won the women's competition with 63 points, while Calgary finished with 60, and Lethbridge 14. The Thunderbirds men's squad placed second with 42 points, behind Calgary (79) and ahead of Lethbridge (17).

On Saturday and Sunday,
Ingrid Wilm and
Markus Thormeyer were standouts at the Rocky Mountain Cup. The UBC men and women earned a combined 1,210 points, ahead of the host Cascade Swim Club (720) and the Calgary Dinos (685).

At the tri-meet, Brundage placed second in the 200-metre individual medley (two minutes, 18.84 seconds) and 800-m freestyle (9:01.28) events.

Swimming in her hometown,
Kirsten Douglas won the butterfly events at 50 (27.83) and 200 (2:19.09) metres.Â
Hillary Metcalfe had first-place performances in the 200 IM (2:17.51) and 200 breaststroke (2:34.56).

On the men's side, Fan won the 200 butterfly in 2:04.23, and the 800 freestyle in 8:14.26. Newcomer Nicolas Duke won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.80.

Thormeyer set three meet records at the Rocky Mountain Cup, while rookie
Alex Pratt broke one. Thormeyer won the 100 freestyle in 47.79, the 200 freestyle in 1:45.53, and the 100 backstroke in 52.89 – all meet bests. He also claimed the top spot in the 200 backstroke by touching the wall in 2:01.52. Pratt, who is from Calgary, won the 400 freestyle in a meet record time of 3:49.72.

UBC also won a pair of relay events.

Thormeyer and Pratt teamed with
Quincy Brozo and
Hoi Lam Karen Tam to win the mixed 200 freestyle relay (1:36.73).

Brozo, Brundage, Wilm, and Tam completed the women's 200 freestyle race in 1:44.21.
Wilm won two women's backstroke events, taking first in the 50-metre length in 27.94 seconds, and the 100-metre race in 1:00.25.

Megan Dalke was also a double winner at the Rocky Mountain Cup, earning first in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.41) and the 200 butterfly (2:15.86).

Brozo was the best swimmer in the 50 freestyle (26.05).

UBC's
Jaren LeFranc won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.16, while teammate
Brodie Young won at the 200-metre length in 2:21.73.

The Thunderbirds are back in Vancouver preparing to compete in their first home meet of the season, the Odlum Brown Limited Colleges Cup – Pacific, taking place Saturday and Sunday at the UBC Aquatic Centre.
