T-Birds look to rebound against local rivals

The Matchup

The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team – ranked fourth in Canada – is back on the road this weekend with tough games at No. 3 Trinity Western in Langley Friday, and Fraser Valley in Abbotsford Saturday.

Friday's 5 p.m. at Chase Office Field is a rematch of the last two Canada West finals, both of which were won by the Thunderbirds. In the 2016 title game, UBC won 3-0 at TWU, while the 2015 scoreline was 1-0 on a neutral-site pitch in Saskatoon.

UBC will then take on the Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday, with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff at the Matsqui Recreation Centre Sports Complex.

Last Action

Both TWU and UFV have yet to play a regular season game in 2017, while UBC is 0-1 after last weekend's loss at Victoria.

The T-Birds had a 13-6 advantage in shots against Victoria, and recorded six corner kicks to the Vikes' three, but were unable to find the back of the net.

By the Numbers

2.6 – Before the game against Victoria, the T-Birds averaged 2.6 goals in non-conference play, which included opponents from the NCAA's Divisions I and II, and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association. UBC will be looking to get back on track offensively this weekend.

1-0-1 – During the 2016 regular season, both the Spartans and Cascades had a win and a tie against the T-Birds.

Players To Watch

Jasmin Dhanda (#9, F) – The fifth-year forward from Surrey, B.C. led the Canada West in shots with 81, and tied for second with 10 goals. She was an offensive force once again last weekend in Victoria, recording a game-high six shots towards the net.

22872

Aman Shergill (#7, F) – Part of UBC's dangerous attacking corps, Shergill is in her first full season as a forward. The fifth-year player from Surrey, B.C., had three shots against Victoria.

Coach's Take

"I'm excited to play Trinity Western and Fraser Valley this weekend," said UBC head coach Jesse Symons. "I think going back to Trinity, where we ended our Canada West final last year, we're in a good spot. We had a good week of training. Last week, we didn't finish our chances. This week, we're going to try and really get around goal as much as possible."
