Thunderbirds battle heat and Melbourne University to scoreless draw

BEIJING, China – A gritty Melbourne University side didn't stop the UBC Thunderbirds from getting the result they needed in their second group stage match at the WEUFT World Cup. Both teams battled stifling heat and stifling opposing defenders in a 0-0 draw, with the single point assuring the 'Birds would move to a spot in the quarterfinals.

"Overall a pretty solid performance. It's nice to keep a clean sheet two games in a row and the effort most put into their defensive responsibilities was good. A big part of the trip is all the various experiences, both on and off the field," said UBC Head Coach Mike Mosher. "Playing against teams from all over the world with different playing styles and going through the adversity of the heat and humidity is a good experience for the guys, as you need to be more thoughtful through the game and in your approach."

UBC goalkeeper Jason Roberts arguably made the play of the game in the 42nd minute. A Melbourne attacker found himself with time and space in the T-Bird 18-yard box. His first shot attempt hit squarely on the base of the post to Roberts' left. The ball rebounded squarely off the post and onto the laces of the Melbourne player. His second shot seemed destined for the far corner, but Roberts sprawled and pushed the ball past the far post with his outstretched left hand.

The Thunderbirds best chance cam midway through the second half when Kyle Sohi, who skillfully looks like he has recovered from the knee injury that plagued him in 2016, found himself eye-to-eye with the Melbourne keeper. Sohi could not quite find the angle and struck the ball just past the near post.

The game ended scoreless and UBC will now have two days for recovery and sight seeing in the Beijing before their quarterfinal match-up.

"We now focus upon a quarterfinal game for Wednesday and we know that which ever team we get will be tough," added Mosher. "The tournament was set up in such a way that some of the top teams will play each other in the quarters."
