CALDWELL, IDAHO – The UBC Thunderbirds (4-18, 3-11) were unable to continue their three-game winning streak Friday afternoon as they matched up against a tough College of Idaho (14-15, 11-6) squad in a double header. Despite some strong pitching, UBC couldn't mount enough of an offensive push and fell in consecutive decisions, 3-1 and 6-4.
Game One
The 'Birds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when
Hillary Strelau singled home
Montana Turnovitski and were cruising behind the pitching of
Zoe Gillis, who allowed only two singles over the first three innings. But in the bottom of the fourth the 'Yotes strung three singles and a walk together to put two across the plate and take a 2-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
UBC threatened in the top of the seventh after Turnovitski and
Lindsey Ogilvie got aboard with base hits. But 'Yotes starter Colette Robert struck out
Mackenzie Siddall to end the ball game.
Robert (8-5) went the distance for the 'Yotes, striking out six in the victory. Gillis (2-7) took the loss for the 'Birds.
Game Two
It was UBC who took the lead again in the second leg of the twin bill. Siddall, Strelau and Ogilvie all singled while Turnovitski reached base on a throwing error in the top of the third, propelling UBC to a 2-0 advantage.
The bottom of the third was one to forget for the 'Birds. The 'Yotes scored six runs on seven hits, with the big swings being a two run double by outfielder Katelyn Geyer and a two-run home run courtesy Delaney Atkins.
The T-Birds got one back against C of I starter Ashley Pesek, with an Ogilvie sacrifice fly in the fifth to cut the margin to 6-3.
Then in the seventh,
Sydney Brown reached on an infield single and Ogilvie doubled just inside the bag at third to bring the tying run to the plate. The 'Yotes brought in Robert from the bullpen, who allowed a sacrifice fly to
Lexie Brenneis which scored Brown, making the score 6-4 and bringing the tying run to the plate. But Robert was able to get Turnovitski to pop up to shortstop and end the game.
Pesek (5-4) got the win for C of I win, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits, fanning six. Ogilvie (2-6) gave up six earned runs on seven hits to take the loss for the 'Birds.
The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 AM doubleheader.
