VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds will get to defend their 2016 Rounsfell Cup championship after defeating the Castaway Wanderers 29-15 in their semi-final match of CDI Premier League playoffs on Saturday afternoon. UBC will be attempting to capture it's thirds straight Rounsfell Cup, given to the champions of the CDI Premier League.
The wet conditions at Windsor Park in Victoria did not hinder UBC wing
Theo Sauder, who scored two first half tries and used a stunning run in the game's final minutes to score his third of the day.
"On to the final. Great appreciation for Castaway Wanderers for a strong, strong test," tweeted UBC forwards coach Curry Hitchborn. "The UBC Rugby men are into their final week of prep."
The UBC win sets up a rematch of last years Rounsfell Cup final between the 'Birds and Burnaby Lake RC, which UBC won 27-12. Burnaby Lake defeated the Seattle Saracens 20-11 in the day's other semifinal.
The 'Birds have dropped both games against Burnaby Lake this season, losing 27-10 last October and 52-7 in early March. The Rounsfell Cup final goes Saturday, May 6th.
