VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds ran their conference winning streaks to five games Friday afternoon with a pair of road wins over Northwest Christian University at James Park in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
The Thunderbirds (11-23, 10-13 Cascade Conference) are locked in a tight battle for the sixth and final playoff spot with Carroll College. The teams entered the day with equal 8-13 records in the CCC and after Carrol's series with Corban this weekend, the teams will do battle in a Sunday triple-header which is shaping up to decide who moves on to the conference tournament.
Game One
Â
The T-Birds collected 12 hits and took advantage of four NCU errors that produced six unearned runs to claim the run-rule victory. UBC scored three runs in the first and three in the second to put the game out of reach.
Â
Lindsey Ogilvie led the charge with a three-hit game, adding three RBI along with the three RBI by UBC catcher
Lexie Brenneis.
Hillary Strelau and
Mackenzie Siddall posted two hits each and Strelau added a pair of stolen bases.
Â
Â
Zoe Gillis (6-8) went the distance to get the win, allowing two runs on four hits. Gillis struck out a pair and walked four.
Â
Katie Walker (3-18) took the loss for the Beacons but struck out a pair of batters in five innings of work.
Â
Game Two
Â
Ogilvie (4-7) pitched a five-hit gem and Brenneis continued her torrid day at the plate, going four-for-four with four RBIs as the 'Birds ran away with an 8-1 victory.
Â
Breinnes cashed in
Sydney Brown with an RBI single in the top of the first inning to get the offence ignited for UBC. The UBC catcher followed that up with another RBI single in the top of the fifth scoring Strelau.

Â
The 'Birds broke the game wide open in the top of the sixth when Brenneis and Ogilvie hit back–to-back RBI singles, driving in four UBC base runners, and giving the 'Birds an 8-1 lead, which would end up the final score.
Â
With two in the books the teams will finish the series on Saturday with two more. Saturday's first game goes at 11:00Â am and will be a conference game while the 1:00Â pm finale will be a non-conference tilt.
