The Matchup
Hunting for wins to extend their season has been the mantra of the UBC Thunderbirds (9-23, 8-13) over the last several weeks. The time is now for the 'Birds if they want to make the post season.
UBC embarks on a southern road trip to play a four game series versus Northwest Christian (4-34, 4-20) on Friday, April 28th and Saturday April 29th.
On Sunday April 30th, the 'Birds will take on Carroll (13-18, 8-13) in a three game set. Depending on how the series with Northwest Christian goes, UBC could be facing a 'win and get in' scenario versus Carroll.
Last Action
UBC took care of business by gaining three huge conference wins versus Northwest University last weekend. The offense led the way for the T-Birds, scoring 26 runs over the three victories.
By the Numbers
3-1 – Zoe Gillis' win-loss record in her last five appearances. Her late season surge is one of the reasons UBC has clawed their way back into playoff contention.
13 – the consecutive games in which UBC's Hillary Strelau recorded a base hit, before a 0 for 3 performance in the non-conference game versus Northwest. It was Strelau's second 13 game hitting streak of 2016-17.
Players To Watch
Darrian Gerard – the freshman from Duncan, BC is starting to find her groove on the mound for the 'Birds. She recorded her first career win in the 'Blue and Gold' versus Northwest.
Shaelyn Ogilvie – the sophomore had her most productive game of the season versus Northwest, registering two hits, a run and a RBI. The 'Birds hope 2016's team RBI leader has more in store this weekend.
Quotable
"I think the kids have really bought in to what we are trying to do and the key hitters are starting to really feel it," says UBC head coach
Gord Collings when asked about his team's offensive surge of late. "The hitters seem to have more confidence when they are coming up to the plate. We have utilized a lot more live pitching in practice, so I think preparation has been the key."
