KIRKLAND, Wash. – The University of British Columbia came up with key runs when needed as they swept Saturday's doubleheader with Northwest University at Everest Park in Kirkland, 8-3 and 4-2.
Game 1 – UBC 8, Northwest U 3
The Thunderbirds came up with three runs in the third and sixth innings to take an 8-3 conference win in game one.
Zoe Gillis pitched a three hitter for the win in the circle.
After neither team scored in the first two innings, UBC scored three runs on two hits and two costly Northwest U errors to take a 3-0 lead.
Montana Turnovitski came up with a two run single as the key hit in the inning. NU answered with one run in their half of the third when Yeawa Asabi scored on an UBC error to make it a 3-1 ball game.
UBC picked up another run in the 4th inning to stretch their lead to 4-1 and then came up with three more runs in the sixth inning.
Sydney Brown had the key hit, a triple to center field, scoring
Hillary Strelau and
Mackenzie Siddall.
The Eagles answered with two runs of their own in the 6th inning on a double by Danielle Bonsky driving in Aubrey Slocum and then Maggie Harshaw singled scoring Bonsky. Neither team would score in the 7th inning, as the T-Birds would take game one.
Rachel Hawley took the loss in the circle for Northwest U going 5.32 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hit.
For UBC, Gillis gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and struck out four.
Hillary Strelau led the Thunderbirds going 3 for 5 from the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run.
Sydney Brown was 1 for 3, scored twice and had 2 RBIs.
Game Two – UBC 4, Northwest U 2
The T-Birds came up with two runs in the top of the 7th inning to break a 2-2 tie and earn a 4-2 victory over Northwest U in the second game of the CCC doubleheader.
Montana Turnovitski came through with a two out, two run single to center to drive in the winning runs.
UBC took and early 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two run single by
Lexie Brenneis. NU came back in the bottom of the first with one run on a fielder's choice scoring Aubrey Slocum who led off the inning with a double to center field.
Slocum then tied the game in the 3rd inning as she led off the inning with a solo home run over the right field fence.
The game remained scoreless until the 7th inning when the T-Birds came through with two runs to pull out the victory.
Northwest U (12-25, 6-17 CCC) was led by Aubrey Slocum, who went 2 for 4, scored twice and added one RBI with her home run. Rachel Hawley went 7 innings for the Eagles in the circle and took the loss.
Hillary Strelau had another strong game going 3 for 4 and scored twice for UBC (8-22, 7-13 CCC).
Lexie Brenneis was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and teammate
Montana Turnovitski was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Darrian Gerard pitched 4 innings in relief, gave up three hits and no runs to earn her first career win for the T-Birds.
The same two teams will complete the four game series on Sunday with another doubleheader at Lake Washington High School. Game times are 11 am and 1 pm.
