MEDFORD, ORE. – On a raining day in Oregon, the UBC Thunderbirds (1-13) dropped a pair of games to a very strong Southern Oregon Raiders (22-4) team that is quickly moving up the NAIA national rankings.
Game One
UBC was behind early when Raider catcher Harlee Donovan hit a two-run homer off 'Birds starter
Zoe Gillis in the bottom of the first.
UBC rallied in the top of the third as a RBI double by
Sydney Brown followed by a
Lexie Brenneis RBI single evened the contest at 2-2.
Southern Oregon use two singles, a walk and three stolen bases to manufacture the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third.
But the 'Birds would tie the game once again in the top of the fifth.
Hillary Strelau continued to produce from the leadoff position by drawing a walk, stealing second and scoring on a
Lindsey Ogilvie single.
The Raiders would deliver the winning run with a walk off RBI double by first baseman Taylor Martinez in the bottom of the seventh.
Both relief pitchers took the decisions, as Victoria Mackey (3-0) was the victor, while Ogilvie (0-4), who had spelled Gillis in the fifth, took the loss.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader saw Raiders starter Karlee Coughlin throw a four hit shutout, as the 'Birds couldn't crack the score sheet in a 5-0 defeat.
The big blow came in the bottom of the sixth when Donovan doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three Raider base runners.
Coughlin (8-0) continued her perfect season with the victory for Southern Oregon while Ogilvie (0-5) was left searching for her first win of 2017 in the defeat.
