VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds finished atop both the men's and women's team standings at the first-ever Odlum Brown Limited Colleges Cup – Pacific in the new UBC Aquatic Centre.
By the end of the two-day short-course event Sunday, competitors had broken 28 of 42 meet records in the fast, new pool.
The UBC women recorded 1,202 points, and finished ahead of Calgary (1,089), and Victoria (861). The Thunderbirds men's squad had 976 points. Calgary was second with 705, followed by Victoria with 467.
"This year's edition of the Odlum Brown Colleges Cup – Pacific in the new UBC Aquatic Center was outstanding," remarked UBC head coach
Steve Price. "In total, 28 of 42 meet records were broken with the T-Birds breaking 18 of them. The format of the meet kept the scoring close with only four from each team being allowed to advance to finals for each event. Even with that both teams came out on top."
Ingrid Wilm won four individual races, including all the backstroke events, in meet-record fashion, and was part of UBC's sweep of the relays. Wilm finished first in the 50-metre backstroke in a time of 27.37 seconds. She also won the 50 fly (27.02), 100 back (59.47), 200 back (2:09.57) races.
Three of the UBC relays posted meet records.
Wilm,
Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson,
Kirsten Douglas, and
Quincy Brozo teamed up to capture the 4x50 medley relay in 1:53.28. Brozo, Seltenreich-Hodgson,
Meredith Levorson, and Wilm won the 4x50 free relay in 1:43.86.
Mackenzie Gunther, Seltenreich-Hodgson,
Emily Overholt and Wilm comprised the UBC squad that recorded a time of 3:44.33 en route to victory in the 4x100 free relay. The 4x100 medley relay team of Wilm,
Hillary Metcalfe,
Jacomie Strydom, and Levorson fell just short of a new meet standard at 4:07.60.
In addition to three relay golds, Seltenreich-Hodgson claimed first place in the 100 free (54.51, a Colleges Cup – Pacific record), and the 400 medley (4:37.09).
"We had so many standout swims throughout the meet it's hard to single out any one swimmer but of course our big guns really stepped up," said Price. "To have
Emily Overholt back racing was a big boost to the women's team. Erika Seltenreich Hodgson and
Ingrid Wilm really showed why they are some of the best swimmers in U SPORTS.
Markus Thormeyer,
Yuri Kisil and
Josiah Binnema lead the way for the men's team with young rookie Jaren LaFranc showing his abilities in the breaststroke events."
Binnema won three individual events in meet-record fashion. He took the top spot in the 50 back (24.83), 100 fly (53.66), and the 200 fly (1:57.84).
He was part of all four UBC relay teams, which all set records for the Odlum Brown Limited Colleges Cup – Pacific.
The 4x50 medley relay foursome of Thormeyer,
Warren Mayer, Binnema and Kisil had a time of 1:39.25. The 4x100 free relay saw Thormeyer,
Jonathan Brown, Binnema, and Kisil swim to a time of 3:18.00. Thormeyer, Kisil,
Colton Peterson and Binnema made up the winning team in the 4x50 free relay (1:30.46). The 4x100 medley relay team (Thormeyer, LeFranc, Binnema, and Kisil) touched the wall first in 3:37.44.
Kisil was first in the 50 free (22.19), 100 free (48.52), and 200 free (1:46.87). Thormeyer won the 100 back (52.79) and 200 back (1:55.05). LeFranc, a rookie from Penticton, B.C., who is a member of Canada's junior national team, won the 100 breast (1:02.21) and 200 breast (2:13.74) races.
"We're pleased with where we sit with three weeks before the Canada West Championships in Victoria, and have set ourselves up well to challenge for the conference titles," said Price. "At this point, we have 17 of 18 women qualified for the U SPORTS championships, and 14 out of 15 men. The rest will get their cuts in Victoria."
Price also wanted to highlight the efforts of those who made the Odlum Brown Limited Colleges Cup – Pacific possible.
"A big thanks to our sponsor, Odlum Brown Limited, and to all the officials and volunteers for putting on a great competition."
