‘Birds earn hard-fought point in OT loss to Huskies

Saskatoon, SK – The UBC Thunderbirds (5-3-1) were able to respond to each of the Saskatchewan Huskies' (7-1-1) three regulation goals to force overtime but fell 4-3 to the No. 3 ranked hosts at Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink Friday night.

Third-year forward Levi Cable scored 1:08 into overtime knocking in a Jesse Forsberg pass into the crease past an outstretched Matt Hewitt for the overtime winner.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-1-1 on the season while UBC drops to 5-3-1.

"It's a tough place to play, it's a small rink, but as the game went on we got better so that's nice to see as a coach and if we can start tomorrow the way we finished, we'll be fine," said UBC head coach Sven Butenschon. "We stayed tough mentally and we had some timely goals. Every time it looked like they were going to take it to us we stepped up and we took it to them and we scored."

Saskatchewan's Michael Sofillas opened the scoring at 11:36 on a quick transition into the UBC zone in the first period. His shot beat Hewitt into the top of the net, stick side. Manraj Hayer's second of the season tied the game with under two minutes left in the first period when he redirected the puck at the side of the net at 18:45 on a shot by Riley Guenther.

Just 42 seconds into the second period, Logan McVeigh gave Saskatchewan the lead with a power play goal potting in a Hewitt rebound. But the lead didn't last long as Austin Vetterl converted on the power play for his team-leading seventh of the season beating Huskies goaltender Jordon Cooke at the 3:55 mark.

McVeigh scored his second of the period on a quick transition beating Hewitt five-hole at 16:37. But before the 20 minutes were up, the T-Birds had knotted the game again when Chase Clayton scored on a scramble in front of the net with 19 seconds left in the frame.

Hewitt finished the game with 37 saves, while Cooke stopped 22 at the other end of the ice for the Huskies.

"We had big games from Austin Glover, it's his home town, he's a big centreman and he was a force," said Butenschon about the rookie forward. "Chase Clayton and Nick Buonassisi, that whole line was great and then Matt Hewitt made the saves again to keep us in it."

The loss snaps a four-game T-Birds win streak but gives them points in five straight.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night in Rutherford Rink with a 5:00 p.m. PT puck drop.
