'Birds and Bisons battle on Flashback Friday

The Matchup

There's never a dull moment in Canada West football. This Friday at 6 PM, inside Thunderbird Stadium two teams with identical 2-2 records will do battle in a game with massive playoff implications.

Manitoba (2-2) and UBC (2-2) are developing a healthy rivalry and dislike for one another. In 2015-16 UBC beat Manitoba three times (twice in regular season, once in CW playoffs) on their way to the Vanier Cup.

Manitoba enacted a small form of revenge in the 2016 pre-season when they shellacked the 'Birds 50-7 at the Vancouver Island Thunder Bowl. The best part about that game for UBC was it didn't count.

Last Action

UBC's offence looked unstoppable in 62-0 win over Alberta. The Thunderbirds set several school records in the win, including largest margin of victory (62 points), tie for most touchdown passes in a game (Michael O'Connor – 5) and a tie for most touchdown receptions in a game (Marshall Cook – 3). If that doesn't get the defending Vanier Cup champs their 'Mojo' back...

Manitoba quarterback Theo Deezar threw for 447 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Bisons' 38-17 win over Saskatchewan at their annual Homecoming game in Winnipeg.

By the Numbers

134.6 – the number of all-purpose yards per game averaged by Marcus Davis this season. The scary thing about that number is the do-everything, offensive dynamo hasn't even hit full throttle yet in 2016.

18126

1 – the number of career interceptions for UBC wide receiver Trivel Pinto. Forced into defensive back duties this season because of injuries, Pinto picked off one pass and almost had a second against the Golden Bears.

Players To Watch

Trey Kellogg – (#21, WR) – scored his first career CIS touchdown against Alberta and is surely becoming a trusted target for O'Connor.

16687

Warren Reece – (#28, LB) – he doesn't get the attention that some of his defensive mates do, but the fifth year linebacker/defensive back is leading the 'Birds in tackles for losses with 3.5 in 2016.

Flashback Friday Video Quotable

This Friday is "Flashback Friday" at Thunderbird Stadium. There will be $2 treats from food trucks, just like they used to cost back in the day. Music from DJ James Young will be all the big hits from the 80's and 90's. To honor the occasion we decided to play a little game of 80's and 90's trivia with the UBC Thunderbirds defensive line.  Buy your tickets in advance online.
