Ogilvie-led T-Birds coming in hot as they head to Oregon

Need to Know

The UBC Thunderbirds softball team (9-16, 7-9) will head out on the road this weekend, as they're set to face a pair of Oregon-based clubs, the Corban Warriors and Northwest Christian Beacons, in back-to-back doubleheaders.

The 'Birds and Warriors will square off on Friday, April 8, with the first game of two set to start at 2:00 p.m. (PT). Scheduled to play the Beacons on Saturday, April 9, the two sides will first clash at 11:00 a.m. (PT). All can be followed through live stats available here.

Last Week

After going 1-3 in four games over the weekend, the T-Birds rebounded with a convincing two-game series against the Northwest Eagles. Taking 13-2 (mercy rule) and 4-1 wins, the 'Birds will be looking to carry some of that momentum to the Beaver State.

By the Numbers

12 – Starting pitcher Lindsey Ogilvie is coming off a busy Tuesday – against Northwest, the ace went the distance in both contests, pitching 12 innings and allowing just two earned runs over the two convincing wins.

4  – Ogilvie also paced the UBC offense against the Eagles, racking up a combined four RBIs on five hits, adding three runs of her own over the two contests.

13 – The 13 runs that the 'Birds put up in the win over Northwest was the most they have posted in a single game since a 13-2 win over Mayville State on March 14, 2015.

The Matchup

The 'Birds played both Corban and Northwest Christian less than three weeks ago, as both schools made the trek up to Softball City in mid March. UBC split with the 'Beacons, winning 6-5 and losing 12-9, before sweeping the Warriors with 9-3 and 4-3 wins.

The Warriors live and die by their high-octane offense, which sits in the top-end of nearly ever statistical category the Cascade Collegiate Conference offers. The driving force behind Corban's attack is the individual efforts of Allie Mendez and Iris Rodgriguez. The junior pitcher Mendez boasts a 0-475/0.850/0.512 slash line, while Rodriguez matches up with 0.473/0.655/0.524 line of her own. Rodriguez, a junior shortstop, has been especially prolific, with her 26 hits and 22 RBI each good for third in the conference.

With an ERA of 6.03, Northwest Christian surrenders the most runs in the CCC on a per-game basis. The Beacons give up runs on both power and contact, as they have given up 19 home runs, tied with UBC for the highest mark in the conference, while their opponents average 0.319 at the plate.

Coach's Take

"We swept Corban and split against Northwest Christian before, so I know we can compete, and I'm looking for similar results," said UBC head coach Gord Collings. "Corban is always improving, and Northwest Christian is a bit of a wild card, but if we play the way we did [against the Eagles], we should get a favourable result on the trip."
