SURREY, B.C. – Seniors
Quinn Dhaliwal (Delta, B.C.),
Lauren du Toit (Vienna, Austria) and
Margarita Sison (Richmond, B.C.) capped off their university softball careers by helping the UBC Thunderbirds to a doubleheader sweep of the 19th-ranked Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls on Saturday at Softball City in Surrey, B.C.
Â
The T-Birds (13-24, 11-17 Cascade Collegiate Conference) earned 7-6 (nine innings) and 2-1 victories over the Hustlin' Owls (27-18, 20-8 CCC) in the final games of the regular season for both squads.
Â
Entering the day, Oregon Tech had a chance to win the CCC's West Division but today's losses combined with Southern Oregon's two Saturday wins means the Raiders will host the CCC post-season championship tournament May 6-8.
Â
"I couldn't have asked for more," said UBC head coach
Gord Collings. "In the clutch, the girls came through and they played well. Our pitchers were unbelievable today. They just made great adjustments from yesterday and we supported them offensively.
Â
"We got the hits in the first game and we had good defence in the second. Aside from the great pitching, the defence played very well, I'm very pleased."
Â
Pinch hitter
Frances Ramsay (Vancouver) hit a bloop single to shallow right field in the bottom of the ninth, allowing
Paige Harbord (Delta, B.C.) to score the game-winning run and give the hosts a 7-6 victory.

UBC celebrates its Game 1 victory
After Ali Graham's RBI single in the top of the ninth gave Oregon Tech a 6-5 lead, the 'Birds replied. With runners on first and second,
Shayla Kaplen (Richmond, B.C.) knocked a single to right center to bring home
Hillary Strelau (Richmond, B.C.) to tie the contest.
Â
It was the second dramatic comeback by UBC in the first game on Saturday.
Â
The home side trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, when a couple of the seniors started the rally. Dhaliwal drew a one-out walk. Then du Toit entered the game as a pinch hitter and delivered with a perfectly placed single just inside the line between the Owls' third baseman and left fielder.
Â
UBC later loaded the bases and Kaplen took advantage by drawing a walk to make it 5-3.
Â
Graham came into the pitch for Oregon Tech but surrendered a single to
Lindsey Ogilvie (Surrey, B.C.) that scored both Harbord and du Toit to level the score at 5-5.
Â
It was two of the four runs batted in by Ogilvie in the first game. Her first inning single and third inning double plated the two runs that allowed the T-Birds to hold a slim 2-1 advantage until the sixth, when the Hustlin' Owls scored four times.
Â
Oregon Tech's Cassidy Hoglund got the rally going with an RBI single to center field. She later crossed home plate on a throwing error, posting the run that made it 3-2 for the visitors. Katie Virtue followed up with a single to score Alyssa Davis before the Owls generated another run on a bases-loaded sacrifice bunt. On the play, UBC couldn't get the force out at home and Sadie Birch came across to put Oregon Tech ahead 5-2.
Â
Ogilvie also threw every pitch for the T-Birds, showing great toughness by completing the game despite being hit by two line drives, including one in the ninth.
Â
Harbord went 4-for-5 at the plate, tying her best-ever performance in a UBC uniform.
Â
The second game was a pitchers' duel with UBC's
Zoe Gillis (Delta, B.C.) (2-8) coming out the winner over Kelly Scott (4-4) of Oregon Tech.
Â
Gillis gave up just one run in a complete-game victory.

The Thunderbirds opened the scoring when Kaplen lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Strelau. Harbord made it 2-0 with an RBI double to left center that plated
Olivia Priestlay (Delta, B.C.).
The Hustlin' Owls managed to scratch across a run in the sixth on a Graham RBI double to make it 2-1, but didn't score again, despite loading the bases in the next inning. With two outs in the seventh and each base occupied by an Owl, Gillis induced a fly out from Graham to end the game.
McKenzie Shrum had half of Tech's hits with three to lead the Owls.
Â
Dhaliwal and Harbord both went 2-for-3 to lead UBC.
Â
After the doubleheader, Dhaliwal, du Toit and Sison were recognized with gifts of photos and flowers for their contributions over the past four years to the UBC softball program.
Â
"Lauren played well at third base," said Collings. "Quinn made some great defensive plays at second base and positioned herself and got a couple of hits. Marga did an outstanding job calling the game behind the plate, keeping the hitters off balance and helping Zoe through tough spots."
Â
"They're great people. It is very meaningful for them to be able to finish their careers wearing a UBC jersey and for our other players to see and follow in their footsteps to continue building our program and culture."
