The UBC Thunderbirds softball team (0-7) fell in both halves of their doubleheader on Tuesday evening, dropping 9-5 and 9-6 decisions, the second of which came in extra innings, to the visiting Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets (7-12) at North Delta Community Park.
"I'm disappointed with the outcome, but encourage by some of the things I'm seeing in the process," said UBC head coach Gord Phillips after the two-game series. "We're young, we're learning, it's nice to get in situations like that, because now they know what they have to do. In the second game, they could have packed it in late, but they didn't. It's encourgaing to see that they've got the resiliency to bounce back."
A four-run first inning from the Yellowjackets put the 'Birds in trouble early, as a two-RBI double from Ryland Estrada was a massive shot in the arm for the visitors from below the border.
The Ogilvies combined to get the 'Birds on the board in the former, as, with
Lindsey Ogilvie (Surrey, B.C.) on second following a double,
Shaelyn Ogilvie (Surrey, B.C.) drove her in with a single shot to center.
The younger Ogilvie also delivered a big shot in the third inning, as her two-run single, good enough to get Shay Kaplen and
Paige Harbord across home plate, was part of a three-run frame that got UBC back on even footing at 4-4.
A fourth frame that saw the Yellowjackets outscore the 'Birds 2-1 restored their lead, before they padded it with a single run in the fifth inning, followed by two more in the seventh.
Zoe Gillis (Delta, B.C.) played just two innings in the contest, giving up three hits and four runs in her time on the mound.
Emma Tuson (Maple Ridge, B.C.) came on in relief of Gillis, throwing five innings, while surrendering eight hits and five earned runs.
On offense, it was the
Shaelyn Ogilvie show for UBC, as the freshman racked up four RBIs on three hits in just four at-bats.
A wild comeback in the seventh inning didn't prove enough in the doubleheader's second contest –Montana-State Billlings broke a 2-2 deadlock in the top half of the frame, and Cameron Cassinelli was the key, as the Yellowjackets pitcher/first baseman ripped off a triple that scored Bella Rovens, Cori Gammon, and Amanda Barnham. Cassinelli then crossed home plate herself, driven in off an Estrada single.
The 'Birds, backs against the wall, responded. First, a throwing error allowed
Lindsey Ogilvie to score from third, and then a single from
Olivia Priestlay (Delta, B.C.) gave
Shaelyn Ogilvie time to cross home plate from second.
Frances Ramsay (Vancouver) drove home
Montana Turnovitski (Langley, B.C.) soon after, getting the 'Birds back on even footing.
UBC couldn't manage another run to end the ball game, and it cost them in the extra frame, as the Yellowjackets poured in another three runs to put the result to bed.
The 'Birds won't have long to dwell on the night's results, as they are set to face the SFU Clan in a doubleheader tomorrow evening. The games are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (PT) and 7:00 p.m. (PT) start times at the SFU Burnaby Campus.
