RECAP: 'Birds swept against Southern Oregon

The UBC Thunderbirds softball team (4-12, 4-6) were swept in a Saturday doubleheader against the Southern Oregon Raiders in Ashland, Oregon, as they fell 9-4 and 7-3 to their Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foes.

As Southern Oregon improved their record to 21-9 (7-3 in the CCC), the 'Birds will now turn their focus back north of the border, as they are set to face crosstown rivals Simon Fraser University next Tuesday, March 29. The T-Birds and Clan will square off at 6:00 p.m. (PT) at the Clan's home field in Burnaby, B.C.

Game One

Southern Oregon's Sydney White held British Columbia to two earned runs and blanked the Thunderbirds over the last five innings of the Raiders' 9-4 win in Game 1 of a Cascade Conference twin bill Saturday morning at University Field.

The Raiders erased a 4-2 deficit as Kayleen Smith, Abigail Lund and Megan Winton combined to drive in seven runs. Smith, whose SOU-record hitting streak is now at 18 games, went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Winton's two-run single in the fourth gave SOU a 6-4 lead, and Smith's two-run double in the fifth was all the insurance the Raiders needed.

White labored through a 133-pitch start, working around seven hits and six walks with two strikeouts. She induced 16 groundouts.

Game Two

Victoria Mackey pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Southern Oregon strung together four consecutive extra-base hits in the second inning to break open its 7-3 defeat of British Columbia in Game 2 of a Cascade Conference doubleheader Saturday at University Field.

Amelia Hensler doubled, Taylor Martinez doubled, Aaliyah Oliver tripled and Kelsey Randall doubled to turn a tied score into a 4-1 game. After UBC cut the lead to 4-3 in the third, the Raiders added three more in the fifth on Nicole Cardoza's RBI single and Megan Winton's two-run single.

Mackey improved to 10-1 on the season, allowing three hits with one walk and a strikeout.
