VANCOUVER – If you ask him, he'd tell you that he'd rather be in Hamilton for a football game instead of being named a U Sports First Team All-Canadian. But the fact his UBC Thunderbirds did not make it back to the 2016 Vanier Cup to defend their 2015 championship doesn't diminish the remarkable season had by 'Bird defensive back
Stavros Katsantonis.
The one dubbed "The Bakersfield Bandit" was a game changer in the defensive backfield for UBC. On the season, Katsantonis recorded 8 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, one quarterback sack and 56 tackles. He was also named a unanimous choice to the Canada West All-Star team earlier this month.
U Sports also honoured two more Thunderbirds on Thursday night. UBC centre and anchor of the 'Blue and Gold' offensive line
Levi Hua was named a Second Team All-Canadian along with receiver/kick returner
Marcus Davis.
Hua was a key component in the both the UBC passing and rushing attacks, helping to protect quarterback
Michael O'Connor and open holes for running back
Ben Cummings to burst through.
Davis was named to the U Sports All-Canadian second team as a kick returner. Despite only playing six games on the year (one exhibition, five regular season) the dynamic playmaker still amassed 842 yards in total offence, good for a staggering 120.3 yards per game.
