VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds concluded the 2016 Canada West women's soccer season regular season with a scoreless road draw against the Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday.
Â
The T-Birds outshot the Wesmen 22-7, with 14 of the opportunities on target. The visitors had 10 shots within the first 25 minutes of play on Sunday. UBC also held a dominant 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
"We created chances early and often, but credit to Winnipeg they kept things really compact at the back," said UBC head coach
Jesse Symons. "We kept the ball well, but needed someone to be a little more clinical today. As a group we are excited to begin this next week and gear up for University of Alberta."
Â
Shayla Chorney, in her last regular season game at UBC, had all five of her shots hit the net. Fourth-year forward
Jasmin Dhanda had six shots overall, and four on goal.
Â
Rookie UBC goalkeeper
Emily Moore made three saves for her second shutout of the season. She improves to 2-0-1 on the year.
The Thunderbirds conclude the conference slate with 23 points from six wins, five draws and three losses. UBC finished fourth in the Pacific Division standings and will open the Canada West playoffs with a quarter-final match at Alberta (8-4-2). The date and time has yet to be announced.
Â
The only previous matchup between the two teams this season was also played in Edmonton and ended 3-2 in favour of Alberta on Sept. 25.
