The Matchup
After a disappointing two weeks on the road to open their 2016-17 Canada West season, the UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team (0-4-0) are returning to the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre for their season home-opener this weekend. The 'Birds will host the Alberta Golden Bears (1-1-0) on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 at 7:00pm (PT) and 4:00pm (PT) respectively.
UBC struggled last season against Alberta, with the Golden Bears finding the back of the net 21 times over four games. However, UBC defeated the Bears in their final meet up last season with a 3-2 OT win. With a solid 5-1 pre-season record on home ice, a return to Vancouver might be just what the 'Birds need to secure their first regular season 'W'.
Last Action
UBC have been dealt four consecutive losses to open their season, though last weekend's pair of games against Calgary could have gone either way. The Thunderbirds fell 1-0 in back to back contests, despite outshooting the Bears on Saturday.
Alberta split their season opening weekend 1-1 against Saskatchewan last Friday and Saturday. The Bears rallied together in double OT to hand the Huskies their first loss of the season, but were defeated 4-2 the following night.
By the Numbers
1 – UBC has just a single goal in their opening four matchups. They will need to reignite their offence if they hope to outscore the Golden Bears this weekend.
19 – Number of power-play opportunities UBC has had over four games. The 'Birds special teams will need to capitalize on the man-advantage in order to get more goals.
Players to Watch
Anthony Bardaro (#10, F) – Logged eight shots during last Saturday's loss to the Dinos, and more shots on net is something UBC desperately needs right now. Bardaro has registered 19 shots so far this season, third most amongst CIS players.
Derek Dun (#34, G) – Started in his first regular season game last Saturday, only allowing one goal and making 23 saves.
