RECAP: UBC sets attendance record at Winter Classic; T-Birds fall to Pronghorns

VANCOUVER – The second-ever UBC Winter Classic drew a school-record crowd of 3,577 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on Friday night as the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns secured a 4-1 triumph over the host T-Birds.

Ryon Moser scored twice for Lethbridge, which also got goals from Jay Merkley and Tim Campbell.

Scott MacDonald (Surrey, B.C.) had the lone marker for the home team.

Friday night's attendance broke the UBC men's hockey record set at last year's Winter Classic, which had 3,049 fans.

Both the 'Birds and the 'Horns seemed to feed off the energy of the large crowd as the first period was fast paced.

UBC had the best scoring chance early as Joe Antilla (Madeira Park, B.C.) came streaking down the left side of ice, fired off a sharp wrist shot only to be stopped by Lethbridge goalie Damien Ketlo, who also stopped the next great UBC chance which came from Anthony Bardaro (Delta, B.C.).

The ice seemed to be tilted in favour of the 'Birds before they were assessed a boarding penalty at 5:37 into the opening period.

Lethbridge took advantage of the power play, netting the only goal of the period 1:20 into the power play. Moser jumped on the rebound off a shot by Justin Valentino and was able to beat UBC goalie Matt Hewitt (New Westminster, B.C.).

With just under four minutes left in the period, Bardaro had another great scoring chance. This time, he was able to beat Ketlo, but not the crossbar. Neither team would got a prime scoring opportunity the rest of the period, which finished with UBC ahead 11-9 in the shot count.

The Pronghorns doubled their lead early in the second early after Jay Merkley scored just 2:02 into the frame.  That goal was assisted by Moser and Valentino.

Lethbridge kept the offensive pressure on and was rewarded with another goal, this one by Campbell as he snapped home a shot from the slot on a 3-on-2 rush. The goal at 6:48 was Campbell's 11th of the season.

Lethbridge kept the pressure on the rest of the period, but Hewitt was up to the challenge and was solid for the 'Birds in net.

A double minor to UBC for high sticking forced the home side on a four-minute penalty kill. Thanks to numerous good saves by Hewitt, the 'Birds were able to get out of the penalty unharmed.

UBC trailed 3-0 after 20 minutes despite holding a 21-17 lead in shots.

The 'Birds came out on the attack to start the third period. Four minutes in, UBC broke the Lethbridge shutout MacDonald fired a shot past Ketlo, putting the Birds on the board. Luke Lockhart (Burnaby, B.C.) got an assist as he cut across the ice and left the puck in the high slot for MacDonald.

Unfortunately for the large UBC crowd, the Thunderbirds could not manufacture another goal in the period, despite offensive pressure for a large majority of the period.

At 18:36, with Hewitt out of the net in favour of the extra attacker, Moser finished off his night with an empty-net goal after getting a turnover just outside the UBC zone.

Moser and Valentino lead the way for the 'Horns each recording three points respectively, and on the backend, Ketlo was able to turn away 29 of the 30 shots he faced.

"We probably out chanced them," UBC coach Adam Shell said of his team's efforts in his first Winter Classic. The 'Birds outshot the 'Horns 30-25.

"We had a few holes in the back end and I would like to see us get some more power plays," Shell said as his team looks to bounce back tomorrow, when UBC faces Lethbridge at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at 7 p.m. PT.
