VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 4-0 shutout of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Sunday at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, B.C. The victory completed a perfect two-game road trip to the Interior and improved UBC's Canada West regular season record to 6-1.
Forward
Jasmin Dhanda (Surrey, B.C.) scored two second-half goals in a six-minute span to lead UBC. Her tallies were bookended by markers from
Madison Guy (Langley, B.C.) and
Shayla Chorney (Vancouver).
Goalkeeper
Olivia de Goede (Victoria, B.C.) stopped two shots for her fourth shutout of the season, the most in the Canada West. She now owns a record of 5-1.
Guy set the tone for a UBC-controlled game in the first few minutes, putting a shot past TRU goalie Taylor Shantz into the back of the net in the sixth minute for her first goal of the season.
The Thunderbirds appeared a little faster than the Wolf Pack for most of the game, and they were certainly more aggressive on the ball in the first half.
The WolfPack came out after the rest with fresh zeal, pressuring UBC with strong passing and matching aggressiveness.
However, Dhanda sealed the victory by scoring in the 69th minute and then again in the 74th on a penalty kick to increase her regular season goal total to four, and move into a tie for fourth in the Canada West. She then assisted
Shayla Chorney (Vancouver) on the final goal of the game, which was Chorney's second this season.
It was an intense 90 minutes with 27 fouls, two injuries and two yellow cards. The WolfPack's yellow card resulted in a penalty kick and Dhanda's second goal of the game. The Thunderbirds had 11 shots on net, compared to TRU's two.
UBC will return home for a two-game series next weekend on campus. The Thunderbirds will host the Regina Cougars on Friday, Oct. 2, and the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 3. Both matches will be contested at Thunderbird Stadium.
