VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team fell to the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday in a non-conference game at the annual Brick Invitational Tournament in Edmonton.
David Robinson (Vernon, B.C.) scored an empty-net goal in the final minute of play to make the final 3-1.
The Huskies potted their first of three tallies 9:42 minutes into play, and were quick to strike again in the following frame, just a minute after the period's opening faceoff. The two goals in the second came from the Huskies Andrew Johnson.
After the first period, in which the teams were tied with six shots on goal apiece, UBC upped the ante. In the second, they only allowed two shots to see second-year goalie
Eric Williams (Langley, B.C.) – both of which resulted in goals – but directed a mighty nine toward Blake Voth, tending goal for Saskatchewan. In the final period, Williams stopped all four shots faced while all 12 of UBCs failed to see the back of the Huskies' net.
The Thunderbirds' only tally of the night came at 19:01 of the final frame, where on the forced man-advantage with Williams pulled, fourth-year forward
Joe Antilla (Madeira Park, B.C.) found Robinson to secure an empty netter.
Out of the four times the two teams met last year, UBC recorded one victory, a 5-0 blowout. The history between the two teams is tense; a total of 11 roughing penalties dolled out between them serves as evidence.
The Thunderbirds will finish their pre-season on Saturday afternoon as they suit up against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks to end the tournament. Puck drop is slated for 1 p.m. PT.
