UBC drops a pair to Concordia

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds softball dropped both games of its home-opening doubleheader to the No. 15-ranked Concordia (Ore.) Cavaliers on Saturday at North Delta Park.

UBC lost the opener 4-2 in eight innings before dropping a 9-0 decision to the visitors from Portland, Ore.

In Game 1, the two teams didn't score a run until the eighth inning. Concordia plated four runs thanks to a sacrifice fly, an RBI single and a two-RBI double.

In the bottom half of the inning, UBC loaded the bases with just one out. Shortstop Yasmin Bains (Richmond, B.C.) singled in designated player Katie Sherlock (Richmond, B.C.) to get the Thunderbirds within three runs.

Concordia tagged out the lead UBC runner at home on the next play. Centre fielder Shayla Kaplen (Richmond, B.C.) kept the comeback bid alive on the next at-bat with a single through the left side to plate catcher Margarita Sison (Richmond, B.C.) and make the score 4-2. However, a ground out on the ensuing play ended the game with the score in favour of the Cavaliers.

Starter Lindsey Ogilvie (Surrey, B.C.) pitched a complete game for UBC. Both Bains and Kaplen went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in.

In Game 2, Concordia scored in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Cavaliers completed the win by adding a pair of runs in the fifth. Bains was 2-for-3 batting for Thunderbirds.

The next action for UBC (9-19) will be next weekend in Arizona at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Thunderbirds open the tournament on Friday, March 13 with games against Jamestown (N.D.) and Bemidji State (Minn.).
