VANCOUVER – Fresh off a 3-1 victory over Calgary on Friday, the No. 6-ranked Thunderbirds continued their winning ways on Saturday, sweeping the Dinos 3-0.
Â
Mac McNicol (Calgary) led the way offensively for UBC racking up 10 kills on a .364 conversion rate.
Alex Russell (Surrey, B.C.) was strong both offensively and defensively putting up seven kills, a solo block, and eight block assists.
Â
The Dinos were lead offensively by Curtis Stockton, who had nine kills and defensively by Sean Martin who had three block assists. Stockton and Keith West had eight digs each.
Â
The first set was all UBC as they started on a 7-1 run, highlighted by a massive block by
Mat Guidi (Coquitlam, B.C.) followed by a huge kill by Russell on the next play. That start put UBC in the driver's seat as they led the whole set.
Â
The second set was a completely different story as the Dinos came out charging. They jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, thanks in part to kills from Connor Frehlich, Ivan Kartev and West, forcing UBC to take an early timeout.
Â
A spirited comeback by UBC gave them a 10-9 lead, its first of the set. The score was tied 21-21 before the T-Birds claimed the last four points, which included two kills from Russell and one from McNicol.
Â
The third set was much of the same as the first set, every time Calgary seemed to gain momentum, UBC would be quick to stop it. UBC jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and seemed to be in cruise control from there, winning the third set 25-14.
Â
"I thought every aspect of our game was going, we have to realize that and take a lot of pride in that, and I thought we did that today for a full match." said UBC head coach
Richard Schick about his team's performance today. "It was good see us respond when we were pushed in the second set, but we are going to be pushed harder throughout the year."
Â
UBC, now with a record of 4-2, looks to improve on their winning ways as they head off to Winnipeg next weekend for two games against the Wesmen.
Â
Calgary (6-2) will entertain UBC Okanagan for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
