VANCOUVER – The Calgary Dinos shut out the UBC Thunderbirds 4-0 on Friday night in Canada West men's hockey action. Former T-Bird Steven Stanford earned his second shutout of the season.
"We need to play with more urgency," UBC head coach
Adam Shell said after the game. "We need to be more desperate."
This is the third loss in a row for the Thunderbirds and their sixth in the past seven games.
The Dinos started strong, opening the scoring during a UBC penalty. The Dinos won the face off and dropped the puck back to the blue line. Cain Franson's point shot bounced through traffic and deflected into the Thunderbirds net to give Calgary the lead at 15:13 of the first period.
UBC fought back and put some great scoring chances on Stanford, but were unable to beat him.
Neil Manning (Nanaimo, B.C.) had three shots on Stanford before the goalie is able to hang on and stop play.
Anthony Bardaro (Delta, B.C.) and
Austin Vetterl (Surrey, B.C.) both had last minute-opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Dinos added two more goals to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
At 14:33, Adam Kambeitz shovelled a rolling puck over UBC goaltender
Eric Williams (Langley, B.C.) after a long Dinos possession, with the assists going to Coda Gordon and Mitch Cook on the power play goal.
Just over two minutes later, Dylan Walchuck converted a rebound off Williams at 16:51.
The third period saw UBC step up their game, creating solid scoring chances against Stanford.
Nick Buonassisi (Coquitlam, B.C.) led a 4-on-1 attack about five minutes into the period but his shot went wide off Stanford's glove. Vetterl, named the Canada West second star of the week on Tuesday, had a great chance at 15:01. He received a pass in the slot and fired, but somehow Stanford managed to get in front of the puck to make the save.
The Dinos held off the Thunderbirds' attempts in the last frame and Franson was able to slot the final goal, his second of the night, into an empty net to end the game at 4-0.
The two teams will play in the final game of 2015 tomorrow night in Calgary at 5 p.m. PT.
