VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team secured a second straight win against the UNBC Timberwolves (1-7) on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 final in Prince George, B.C.
The two wins this weekend elevate the T-Birds to an impressive 6-0-1 in league play, placing them comfortably atop the Pacific Division standings.
UBC was dominant throughout the match and only allowed one shot on net, as goaltender
Chad Bush (Ottawa) posted his fourth shutout of the season.
T-Bird
Boris Si (Vancouver) had a second-minute shot go off the crossbar.
In the 13th minute, fifth-year veteran
Milad Mehrabi (Coquitlam, B.C.) drilled a shot off a nice feed from
Sean Einarsson (Surrey, B.C.) securing the 'Birds first goal, much to the chagrin of a frustrated Timberwolves' defence. The goal was also Mehrabi's first of the season.
Just over a minute after providing the go-ahead goal, Mehrabi found himself in all alone on a breakaway, but UNBC goalkeeper Tyrone Venhola challenged aggressively and denied UBC the early two-goal lead.
In the 36
th minute, with Venhola down and the UNBC net wide open, Mehrabi come close to assisting on a UBC goal, but his pass to
Jules Chopin (Nelson, B.C.) was sent just wide.
While UBC had no shortage of chances in the first half, both teams combined for just two shots on net, both on Venhola while UBC's Bush had a quiet first half as the Timberwolves failed to land a ball on goal.
In contrast to the first half, Venhola was under siege early in the second. Four consecutive corner kicks from UBC's Si early in the half kept pressure in the Timberwolves zone.
Venhola made a spectacular diving save off Mehrabi, who tried to fake him with a shot to the far left of the net. Between the 58th and 65th minutes
Gagan Dosanjh (Abbotsford, B.C.) also had three quality scoring chances. The first two opportunities were denied by a sprawling Venhola, while the third was deflected out off a great defensive effort from UNBC's Conrad Rowlands.
UBC was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute on a tackle just inside the UNBC 18-yard-box. Venhola, red-hot throughout the second half, was unable to stop the penalty shot as midfielder
Harry Lakhan (Surrey, B.C.) nabbed UBC's second of the night.
While UNBC found some offensive drive late in the match, a majority of their chances were blocked, wide or offside. In the end UNBC only recorded a single shot on goal.
The 'Birds will look for their seventh straight win when they take on Victoria (4-1-2) at Thunderbird Stadium next Friday at 7:15 p.m. (PT). UNBC will be on the hunt for some desperately needed wins next weekend against Trinity Western (3-2-1).
