PREVIEW: T-Birds look to continue impressive start as they host Cougars this weekend

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds, the 10th-ranked men's hockey team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), are back home this weekend to host a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against the Regina Cougars.

Both games will start at 7 p.m. at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Friday's matchup will be broadcast live on CiTR 101.9 FM.

UBC comes into the weekend in second place in the Canada West league standings with four wins and two overtime losses.

Last weekend on the road, the Thunderbirds earned three of a possible four points against the Manitoba Bisons. Forward Scott MacDonald (Surrey, B.C.) scored twice and defenceman Kyle Becker (Langley, B.C.) recorded three points in a 4-2 UBC win on Saturday night, while goaltender Eric Williams (Langley, B.C.) stopped 29 shots for the T-Birds.

On Sunday, UBC lost 3-2 in double overtime, with goals from Anthony Bardaro (Delta, B.C.) and Austin Vetterl (Surrey, B.C.).

Bardaro is currently tied for first place in Canada West scoring with nine points in six games. The third-year forward also brings a four-game goal-scoring streak into the series against the Cougars.

Vetterl, a rookie, has also been an important offensive contributor with five points (two goals and three assists) in six games, which are the same scoring numbers put up by forward Luke Lockhart (Burnaby, B.C.). Another first-year player, Becker, has chipped in with four points from the blueline and is the fourth-leading scorer among Canada West defencemen.

UBC head coach Adam Shell has been alternating Williams and Matt Hewitt (New Westminster, B.C.) in net, and both own 2-0-1 records so far this season.

Regina (1-5-0) is in last place in the conference. The Cougars won their first league game 2-1 at Manitoba on Oct. 9, but have since lost five straight games, by a combined score of 30-8. Last weekend, they lost both ends of a home-and-home series against provincial rivals, Saskatchewan. Regina lost 3-1 at home on Friday and then dropped 6-2 decision in Saskatoon.

Troy Hunter, Dylen McKinlay and J. J. Coleshaw lead Regina in scoring with three points each.
