VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team, currently 9-0-1 in the Canada West and tied for first in the CIS top 10, is looking to complete an undefeated regular season this weekend.
The only obstacles standing in the way of UBC and a lossless season are this weekend's matches against the Trinity Western Spartans (5-3-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. PT and the Fraser Valley Cascades (5-3-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both TWU and UFV are in the hunt for a second-place finish in the Pacific Division.
UBC clinched first in the Pacific, and the right to host the league's Final Four playoff tournament should the team get there, last weekend with a road sweep.
"Our focus this weekend is try and maintain the positive momentum generated over the past several weeks," said UBC head coach
Mike Mosher. "At the same time, we will look to ensure we are fully healthy and fresh going into playoffs next week as we have earned that right to rest some players where needed."
The T-Birds won 3-0 at Thompson Rivers and 6-0 over UBC Okanagan. The nine goals came from six different players, a testament to the depth of this year's roster.
While UBC's offence has certainly picked up in the past two weeks, outscoring their opponents 12-0, there is no doubt that first-year goalkeeper
Chad Bush (Ottawa) is a major factor in the team's success. Bush has not let a shot past him since September 26 and has recorded a league-leading seven shutouts.
Another notable accomplishment has been the performance of midfielder
Sean Einarsson (Surrey, B.C.), whose eight goals this season have him tied for second in Canada West scoring totals.
Friday night's matchup against the Spartans certainly has the potential to go either way. Trinity Western defeated UNBC (1-9-0) in a pair of games last weekend, outscoring the WolfPack 6-1.
The Cascades have only recorded one win since the end of September, but it was a 4-1 victory over Trinity Western.
The last meeting between UBC and TWU ended 2-0 for the 'Birds, as
Titouan Chopin (Kaslo, B.C.) and
Luke Griffin (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored. Einarsson,
Gagan Dosanjh (Abbotsford, B.C.) and
Harry Lakhan (Surrey, B.C.) found the net for UBC in its 3-2 win over UFV on Sept. 18.
Dosanjh, Lakhan,
Milad Mehrabi (Coquitlam, B.C.) and
Justin Wallace (Kamloops, B.C.) will be honoured this weekend for finishing their university careers with UBC.
