T-Birds head north to take on in-province rivals UNBC

Vancouver – The No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team (4-0-1) will hit the road this weekend for a set of back-to-back games against the UNBC Timberwolves (1-5-0). The matches mark the first meetings between the two teams in the 2015-16 season.

The T-Birds and Timberwolves will square off on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4th at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Field in Prince George. Both games commence at 2:15pm (PT).

The clubs haven't faced each other since September 2014, when UBC dominated another pair of weekend matches, outscoring the Timberwolves 8-1. This time around, the Thunderbirds will look to add to the sterling 13 points that they earned from their first five matches of the season, while the Timberwolves hope to secure their first win since September 19th.

Although the team has yet to suffer a regular season loss, T-Birds head coach Mike Mosher still notes that there is room for improvement offensively.

"We need to try and make more from our possession and create more quality scoring chances overall. This means better combination play between our midfielders and our forwards in the final third of the field," said Mosher.

The 'Birds narrowly avoided a draw against UBCO last weekend with a late goal from midfielder Kerman Pannu (Surrey, B.C.) securing the victory. Pannu, with his first goal of the season, kept UBC's 4-game win streak alive. The win also helped UBC maintain their position atop the conference standings.

In contrast to UBC, the Timberwolves will be on the hunt for a much needed pair of wins. UNBC has struggled to find the back of the net this season and were rendered scoreless throughout last weekend's matches against the UFV Cascades (4-2-0). They will need to find a way past UBC's solid backline, and then first year goalkeeper Chad Bush (Ottawa), who has only allowed one goal in his last three outings.

While the Thunderbirds' impressive mid-season record certainly warrants optimism, Mosher acknowledges that the unpredictability of the division is always a factor.

"In Canada West, you are foolish to take any team lightly," the veteran head coach mused. "I think any team in our division is capable of taking points from any other team on the day."
