VANCOUVER – The fourth-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team defeated the Calgary Dinos 1-0 Saturday afternoon, rebounding off a tie last weekend against Victoria. With the win, the 'Birds now have an impressive record of 9-1-1, good for second in the league's West Division.
The Thunderbirds dominated the first half of play, directing a total of six shots – three on goal – toward Dinos 'keeper Samantha Chang-Foidl, who would ultimately succeed in shutting them out.
UBC's first good opportunity came in the 59th minute, when
Nicole Sydor (Delta, B.C.) took a header from the middle of the 18'. Chang-Foidl dove left from the side of the six and managed to ground the ball before it crossed the line, keeping the game scoreless and the Dinos still in it.
But not for long; Calgary could only hold the 'Birds down for so long. In the 87th minute, Fourth-year forward
Amrit Berar (Richmond, B.C.) received a long pass from fifth-year midfielder
Taylor Shannik (Delta, B.C.) and drove it up the right side of the field. A clean shot from inside the 18' and into the far left corner gave Berar her fifth goal of the season, and the 'Birds just the edge they needed to secure their victory.
UBC's
Olivia de Goede (Victoria, B.C.) stopped five Calgary shots for her sixth clean sheet of the season.
There's no rest for the Thunderbirds as they're set to visit the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday morning. Lethbridge is currently fifth in the East Division, with a record of 2-6-3. UBC looks to take over top spot in the West with another win. First kick is slated for 11 a.m. (PT).
