VANCOUVER – Ahead of schedule and with an eye on a spot in the Canada West post-season, the UBC Thunderbirds (4-2 overall, 3-2 conference) are set to host the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, October 17 at 2 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium. This is one of your last opportunities to cheer on UBC Football as they make a push toward to post-season.
Before the game kicks off, T-Birds fans can enjoy some of the many food truck options surrounding Thunderbird Stadium while getting into some school spirit with face and body painting stations, prizing and more. As well, the Sardis Drum Line makes its way to UBC and will take to the field during halftime to keep the atmosphere up for the crucial Canada West match-up.
About the game: Alberta Golden Bears (2-3, 4th, Canada West)
at UBC Thunderbirds (3-2, 2nd, Canada West)
UBC, coming off of a 39-21 win in Alberta just days ago, will look to once again rely on a relentless rushing attack that was led by fifth-year senior
Brandon Deschamps who scampered for a season-high 86 yards in 16 carries (5.4 per carry). Thunderbirds quarterback
Michael O'Connor was effective through the air in Alberta going 21-for-32 (66%) for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Golden Bears offence is likely to come to Vancouver grasping a different gameplan with the ball as the UBC defence came up big on several occasions last week led by free safety
Taylor Loffler and linebacker
Mitch Barnett who will look to help the Thunderbirds to a fourth Canada West victory.
The game, should we win, puts us in the proverbial "driver's seat" with regard to a potential spot in the Canada West Playoffs, something that some thought might be a year or two away. Head coach
Blake Nill along with his staff have put the T-Birds in a position to close in on a spot in the Canada West Playoff picture, but students, alumni and fans from all across the Lower Mainland are being asked to make this game the loudest of the season, giving us a true "home field advantage".
