VANCOUVER – The No. 7-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team is back in action this weekend, as the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies are coming to town for games at David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium. The two games will take place on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3, respectively, with both contests kicking off at 7 p.m. (PT).
The T-Birds are going into Saturday's contest riding a four game winning streak that stretches back to a 2-0 win over the Alberta Pandas on September 18. Over the course of the season, the Blue and Gold have showed excellent scoring depth, as 10 players have at least one of the team's 23 goals.
Jasmin Dhanda (Surrey, B.C.) leads the group with four tallies of her own, and leads Canada West with 32 shots on the season.
However, that scoring ability isn't all that's earned UBC six wins in seven games to start the campaign, as their ability to keep the ball out of their own goal has been impressive. The cohesion between the backline, headlined by
Aman Shergill (Surrey, B.C.) and
Krista Whittaker (Nanaimo, B.C.), has made life a little easier for goalkeeper
Olivia de Goede. A Victoria, B.C., native, de Goede, when called upon, has been excellent, posting a 0.49 goals-against average, good for third in the conference. She leads the Canada West in shutouts with four. The team has surrendered just three goals in seven games.
Regina sits in sixth place in the Canada West's East Division standings with a record of 1-3-2. The Cougars are the second-lowest scoring team in the entire conference, having tallied just three goals in six matches. Saskatchewan is tied atop the East Division, having won five of its six games. Midfielder Kelly Cerkowniak is one of the players tied with Dhanda in scoring with four markers so far this season.
