VANCOUVER, BC - The UBC women's soccer team kept up their momentum with a 3-0 victory in their rematch against the UNBC Timberwolves on Sunday afternoon on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.
Â
The Thunderbirds opened the game confidently with sustained pressure in the offensive zone, forcing the Timberwolves back on their heels from the very opening minutes of the game. After several solid chances,
Jasmin Dhanda broke the ice in the 29th minute by one-timing a cross from teammate
Amrit Berar after a series of sharp passes up the right side.
Â
UBC kept their foot on the gas, as just minutes later forward
Nicole Sydor pegged a shot off the crossbar. The remainder of the first half saw little change in UBC's dominant performance, with possession staying largely in their offensive zone.
Â
Little changed in the second half as the Timberwolves were forced into their own end once again. Dhanda continued to shine as she scored again in the 64th minute, fed from up the middle by a great pass from
Taylor Shannik.
Â
The final goal of the game came from
Shayla Chorney, her first of the season, from a beautiful cross from rookie midfielder
Reetu Johal. This capped off another decisive win from the T-Birds.
Marlee Maracle, making her first career CIS start, stopped all three shots she faced for her first career CIS victory. UBC outshot UNBC 8-3.Â
Â
Asked what the team is hoping to build on in the coming weeks, second-year head coach
Andrea Neil spoke of the on-going learning period for her team, as they adjust to the big changes from last season. Neil stresses that players are finding their rhythm as they get to know one another: "We're building as a group. There have been a lot of changes since last year, so we're looking to build on the foundation and then build as a group together."
Â
Asked to comment on the star performance by forward Dhanda this weekend, Neil smiled.
"She's tremendous. She's coming off a sickness, but she's getting back into the rhythm now. We certainly missed her in August and September."
Â
The Thunderbirds hope to harness the momentum from their wins this weekend (2-2-0) as they head to Kamloops to face Thompson Rivers University (0-2-2) on September 19.
