VANCOUVER, BC - The UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team continued their winning streak Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 win over the UNBC Timberwolves in their home opener at Varsity Field.
Early goals from the Thunderbirds set the tone for the rest of the game according to UBC head coach Mike Mosher. "We got what we wanted and scored early goals,"said the national champions' head coach. Canada West reigning Rookie of the Year,
Sean Einarsson, waited only two minutes before netting the first goal of the game. Only four minutes later midfielder
Harry Lakhan added the second goal. In the 18
th minute
Jules Chopin added the third goal leading UBC to a comfortable lead at the half.
At the halftime break UNBC made seven changes, which proved useful as their team dominated the first part of the second half, and were successful in scoring a goal from a corner.
Coach Mosher responded with the inclusion of rested player
Navid Mashinchi who had an immediate impact on the team by beautifully setting up
Alex Orasa for UBC's fourth goal of the day (75
th minute). Then two minutes later adding another assist on Einarsson's second goal of the game.
On the new team members Mosher said, "Fullback
Chris Serban has been excellent since the day he joined, while other rookies need to step up their game."
The No. 1 ranked Thunderbirds are now (3-0-0) on the year and will take on the Timberwolves again tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Thunderbird Stadium.
