Van Beilen wins third gold medal at Canadian Nationals

VIctoria, BC - Tera Van Beilen completed a clean sweep at the Canadian National Swimming Championships in Victoria on Friday winning her third gold medal, sweeping all three women's breaststroke events (50m, 100m, and 200m).

Van Beilen won in a time of 31.52 in the 50m breaststroke Friday night, beating her UBC Thunderbirds teammate Rebecca Terejko by 0.23. Erin Stamp also made the 'A' final clocking a time of 32.26 to finish eighth overall.

Coleman Allen, the CIS Male Swimmer of the Year, took gold in the men's 100m butterfly. He won in a time of 53.42. Unfortunately it was under the qualifying standard time of 52.52 to earn a spot on the Commonwealth Games team.

Savannah King touched the wall in a time of 4:12.59 in the women's 400m freestyle to finish third. She just missed the selection standard time by 0.12. Brittany MacLean, the younger sister of UBC's Heather MacLean, won the event in 4:06.20.

Competition ends Saturday. Morning heats begin at 10 a.m. with evening finals at 6 p.m. at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
