Thunderbirds finish Idaho tournament with a split

VANCOUVER — The UBC Thunderbirds finished off the College of Idaho / Northwest Nazarene Softball Tournament with a split Saturday, losing 10-9 to Eastern Oregon University and defeating the College of Idaho 9-1. The Thunderbirds finished 3-3 in the tournament and now are 6-8 on the season.

UBC scored four runs in the third inning and another three in the fourth inning en route to a 9-1 route of the College of Idaho in the afternoon affair.

Brittany Hince Siwicki started things off with a solo home run in the top of the third inning, her second round tripper of the day. Alana Westerhof followed suit with a three run bomb of her own to put UBC in front 4-0. 

In the fourth inning, Yasmin Bains stepped up with the bases loaded a delivered a double to left centre scoring all three runners and making it a 7-0 game.

The Thunderbirds would add single runs in the fifth and sixth inning's to earn the 9-1 victory.

Westerhof picked up the win pitching six strong innings, while allowing just one earned run on four hits.

In the morning game the Thunderbirds jumped out to 7-3 lead, but in the bottom of the sixth, inning the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers exploded for seven runs and held on for a 10-9 victory.

Leading 1-0 going into fifth inning Cassandra Dypchey singled to right scoring Carlyn Shimizu and Shayla Kaplen to put UBC in front 3-0. Dypchey would later score on a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-0 for the Thunderbirds.

However, in the bottom half of the inning Eastern Oregon finally got to UBC pitcher Lindsey Ogilvie scoring three runs on three hits to cut the lead to 4-3.

Once again, UBC's bats came alive in the sixth inning. Hince Siwicki led off with a solo home run, her first of the season. Westerhof tripled to score Dypchey and would later score herself on a wild pitch to put the Thunderbirds in front by four, 7-3.

Unfortunately, the bottom of the sixth would be UBC's undoing. The Mountaineers scored seven runs on five hits, as the Thunderbirds helped out with a pair of fielding errors to trail 10-7 going into the final inning. 

UBC would add a pair of runs in the seventh, but that is where it would end as Eastern Oregon earned the come from behind 10-9 victory.

Ogilvie pitched four and a third innings for UBC allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Westerhof who came on in relief in the sixth inning would take the loss despite not allowing an earned run. She did give up two hits while striking out one.

Eastern Oregon's Lindsey Walchli went the distance pitching seven innings and surrendering nine earned runs on 12 UBC hits.

Dypchey finished the day 3-for-5, with two RBI, and two runs scored. 

UBC will be back in action next week when they take on Corban University at Beddie Field in Burnaby, B.C. First pitch is at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26.
