UBC cruises to a convincing win over Thompson Rivers

Vancouver, BC - The No.1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team picked up its seventh win of the season beating Thompson Rivers University 6-0 at Thunderbird Stadium on Friday evening.

At the start, the Thunderbirds played a cautious game and did not push too hard, knowing that they have another game tomorrow night. The first half started slow, but UBC eventually capitalized on their ball-heading specialty to score two identical goals within four minutes.

The first goal came in the 15th minute after the league's assist leader Navid Mashinchi crossed a tricky ball from the right side only to cause confusion among TRU's defence and find centre back Bryan Fong who comfortably headed it in the net. In the 19th minute the second goal came from Milad Mehrabi's trademark corner kick, perfectly placed on Paul Clerc's head and into the net. The Thunderbirds led 2-0 at the half.

Early in the second half UBC had many dangerous chances but TRU's goalkeeper Travis Froehlich was doing all he could to keep his team in the game. That quickly turned in to a nightmare for Froehlich as UBC scored four goals within five minutes. Mashinchi got things going with a precise finish after a beautiful one-two play with Niall Cousens inside the box. A minute later it was 4-0 when Cousens scored off a cross from left back Chris Serban. In the 71st minute the scoreboard turned to 5-0 as Mashinchi continued his brilliant performance with a great long-range shot. Rookie Boris Si got in on the act, rouunding out the scoring in the 74th minute to make it a 6-0 final.

The only dangerous moment TRU had was through Sohail Saran who hit the crossbar with a rocket long range shot. After that the game went quiet as UBC improved to 7-0-0 on the year, while TRU remained last in the division with a (0-6-1). They have still yet to score this season.

UBC's star Navid Mashinchi said after the game that getting the top goalscorer's award is not a priority of his.On the national title hopes Mashinchi said that they are taking things step by step and the team is not thinking about the title just yet.

UBC will host UBC Okanagan (4-4-1) tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm at Thunderbird Stadium, while TRU will travel to Victoria to play the University of Victoria.
