UBC loses to Trinity Western in Canada West quarter-final

Langley, BC - The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team's season came to close Friday night, losing 3-1 to Trinity Western in the Canada West quarter-final at Rogers Field in Langley. The No. 2-ranked Spartans will now host the Canada West Final Four as the top seed from the Pacific Division.

The two-time defending CIS Champions opened the scoring in the second minute of action as two-time CIS All-Canadian Krista Gommeringer beat Emily Wilson to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

The Thunderbirds answered in the 19th minute. Madison Guy jumped on a loose ball in the penalty area and made no mistake scoring the equalizer and tying the game at 1-1.

Just three minutes later the Spartans regained their lead. Jenna Di Nunzio's cross into the box eventually found the foot of Stephanie Chin who scored to give Trinity Western a 2-1 lead. That is how things would stand through 45 minutes of play.

In the second half, Alessandra Oliverio was taken down on a breakaway by Aman Shergill resulting in a yellow card for Shergill and a penalty kick for Oliverio. She made no mistake to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage.

UBC's leading scorer Jasmin Dhanda did not start, but did substitute into the game in the 57th minute. Unfortunately her presence would not result in a goal.

Trinity Western locked down on defence the rest of the way, allowing just one shot on goal all game long to win 3-1

Christina Oliverio earned the win in net for Trinity Western. Wilson made three saves in the loss for the Thunderbirds.

UBC finished the regular season and playoffs with a 6-5-2 record.

The Spartans will now host the Canada West Final Four next weekend.
