No.1 ranked Spartans shutout UBC 3-0

Langley, BC - The UBC Thunderbirds suffered their biggest loss of the season with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the No.1 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans in Langley, BC on Saturday evening.

Trinity Western University extend its winning streak to eight games, improving to 9-0-1 on the season while the Thunderbirds fall to 5-3-2.

After a quiet first 10 minutes of play, Trinity Western got into their well known attacking style on Thunderbirds goalkeeper Emily Wilson. Two corners and two shots on goal by the Spartans were just an indication of what was to come.

The first goal finally came in the 28th minute by Jessica King, who increased her league leading goal total to 10 on the season. That goal sparked an even more aggressive attack from the Spartans who almost went two up when Jenna Di Nunzio hit a shot that was well saved by Wilson. Trinity Western were successful in securing the second goal in the final moments of the first half as Krista Gommeringer capitalized on an assist from Isabella Di Trocchio with a close range shot to put the home side in front 2-0 through 45 minutes of play.

Entering the second half, the Thunderbirds had a mountain to climb, as no team has been able to come back against the Spartans after trailing by two goals this season. Trinity Western made sure that didn't happen tonight, as they picked up where they left off in the first half.

The Spartans produced four shots in the first 10 minutes. A shot by Gommeringer in the 55th minute almost made it a three goal advantage, but she would be denied by the crossbar.

The Thunderbirds pushed more in the last minutes as Meagan Pasternak had two efforts on goal in the 87th and 88th minutes, both were unsuccessful.

Trinity Western sealed the game with a third goal by midfielder Vanessa Kovacs who received a great cross from the game's MVP Gommeringer and ended it with a great finish. 3-0 was the final.

UBC will wrap up the Canada West regular season next weekend with a pair of games. Friday, October 17th they will be in Victoria to face the Vikes and then on Sunday, October 19th they will play host to the Spartans at 12:00 pm at Thunderbird Stadium.
