VANCOUVER -Â On Saturday, the No. 6-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team began their double-header weekend on the Prairies with a controlling 3-0 win over the University of Regina Cougars. The Thunderbirds scored all three goals in the first 12 minutes of play, effectively utilizing the overwhelming 40-kilometre an hour wind they had at their backs during the first half.
BOX SCORE
Â
The UBC command began early in the fifth minute when third-year
Taylor Shannik took advantage of a corner kick and sent the ball high into the far side of the Regina net.
Â
This momentum continued as Shannik and fifth-year forward
Janine Frazao made a beautiful passing play to set-up second-year midfielder
Kym van Duynhoven with a shot at the top of the box in the eighth minute of play that would mark the second of the UBC goals.
Â
Only four minutes later, Frazao assisted rookie Jasmine Dhanda in scoring the Thunderbirds' third and final goal, a shot to the top corner from the left side of the box. This goal marked Dhanda's first career goal with UBC.
Â
Defensively, the Thunderbirds paralleled their outstanding offence. Their efforts and unwavering hustle deterred the Cougars' from any shots within the confines of the goal. UBC goalkeeper,
Emily Wilson, earned the clean sheet in her first start of the season.
Â
Despite the UBC momentum in the first half, the Cougars fought tirelessly as the wind turned in their favour during the second half. Cassidy Andres had a strong scoring opportunity in the 51st minute but her shot fell just beyond the right post. Only six minutes later, Meagan Cormier initialized a turnover near UBC's goal; however, her shot went just high of the top bar. With this loss, the Cougars, who will face Trinity Western tomorrow at noon, fall to 2-2-0.
Â
This win extends the Thunderbirds' regular season record to 2-0-2. Tomorrow, UBC travels north to Saskatoon for an 11 a.m. (PST) game against the University of Saskatchewan.Â
