VANCOUVER – UBC Thunderbirds athletes had another successful medal haul in the second week of competition at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., which wrapped up on Saturday.
Ben Chow (Surrey, BC), along with partner Dan Caverly, won gold in men's beach volleyball, defeating Ontario 2-1 on Saturday.
To cap off his fantastic week in Sherbrooke and to honour his commitment as a coach of the Fraser Valley Zone 3 team at the 2012 B.C. Summer Games, Chow was chosen as the Team B.C. flag bearer for the closing ceremonies.

On the same day, three future Thunderbirds, Luigi Polisi (Coquitlam, BC), Mitchell Popadynetz (Maple Ridge, BC) and Adriano Clemente (Burnaby, BC) finished second in men's soccer to come home with silver.
Also on Aug. 17, UBC's Maxwell Lattimer (Delta, BC) won his third gold of the games, taking first as part of Team B.C's winning crew in the men's eight. Mark Goudie (Vancouver, BC) was also a part of the gold-medal boat.
The day before, Lattimer won gold in both the men's pair and men's lightweight four. UBC teammate Angus Todd (Vancouver, BC) and younger brother and incoming Thunderbirds recruit, Aaron Lattimer (Delta, BC) were both part of the lightweight four boat.
James Kirker (Calgary, AB) also medaled in the men's lightweight four, winning bronze as part of Team Alberta's entry. In the men's quadruple sculls, Team Alberta, which included T-Bird Jack Dundas (Calgary, AB), captured bronze.
On the women's side, Zoe Fettig-Winn (Victoria, BC) won two gold medals in rowing. She triumphed in the women's pair as she, along with Jillian Legare. Just a few hours later, she and UBC teammates Emily Gerson (Coquitlam, BC) and Hillary Janssens (Surrey, BC) took first in the women's eight. Olivia Fischer (Calgary, AB) was part of the third-place Alberta team in the women's four.
Thunderbird rowing graduate and former Olympic gold medalist Ben Rutledge was one of the coaches for Team B.C's crew.
In track and field, UBC's Maria Bernard (Calgary, AB) was a double medalist for Team Alberta. She won silver in the women's 1500 metres on Aug. 15 and then followed that performance with a gold medal win in the women's 5000, finishing the grueling race in 17 minutes, 33.44 seconds.
Joy Spear Chief-Morris (Lethbridge, AB) was also competing for Alberta at the Canada Summer Games. She won silver on Aug. 15 as part of the province's 4x100-metre relay team.
Devan Wiebe (Vancouver, BC) won silver for Team B.C. in the women's 4x400m relay, while incoming recruit Sebastian Adugalski (Delta, BC) did the same with the men's 4x400m team.
Luc Bruchet (White Rock, BC) was placed second in the men's 1500 metres (Aug. 15) while former T-Bird Justin Kent (Surrey, BC) claimed bronze in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
UBC athletes won 25 gold medals, 14 silvers and 14 bronzes during the 2013 Canada Summer Games.
Recruit Jonathan Brown (Airdrie, AB) earned the most medals of any UBC athlete, with five while Max Lattimer had the most gold with three.
The next Canada Summer Games will take place four years from now in Winnipeg while Prince George will host the Canada Winter Games in 2015.
