VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds remained as hot as the Tucson sun this weekend, winning twice on Friday at the Tucson Invitational Games to extend their winning streak to six games.
UBC is now 6-1 in the exhibition tournament and 16-12 overall. While they won three times on Thursday, their Friday may have been even more impressive.
The pitching staff and defence came to play, refusing to allow a run on the day.
The Thunderbirds started the day with a 2-0 victory over Briar Cliff University thanks to a complete game shutout from standout
Alana Westerhof (Delta, BC). Westerhof struck out eight batters and allowed just three hits, adding another highlight to what has been an excellent season for her both at the plate and on the mound.
Westerhof got support from
Cassandra Dypchey (Surrey, BC), who singled in a run in the third, and
Lindsay McElroy (Delta, BC), who doubled and scored in the fourth. Both girls had two hits on the day, joining
Yasmin Bains (Richmond, BC), who also added an RBI.
In the second game of the day, UBC didn't need their pitching staff but got a stellar performance nonetheless, helping defeat Dordt College 10-0.
The Thunderbirds rallied for 15 hits in the game, spreading the scoring throughout. Bains led the way with four hits and two runs, wrapping up quite the day at the plate for the sophomore.
Nicole Day (Surrey, BC) got the nod on the mound for her second start and third appearance of the tournament. She threw six shutout innings, striking out six and allowing just five baserunners.
UBC will finish their tour of duty in Arizona on Saturday with three more games, including a battle with number-one ranked California State-San Marcos.
